Thompson Medicare Brokerage

The Crossroads

When navigating the world of Medicare, one of the most important choices you’ll face is whether to enroll in a Medicare Supplement plan (Medigap) or a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan. Both options are designed to help with costs not covered by Original Medicare—but they differ significantly in structure, flexibility, and long-term value.

At Thompson Medicare Brokerage, my goal is to empower you with the clarity you need to make the choice that’s best for you.

🏥 What Are Medicare Supplements?

Medicare Supplement plans (Medigap) are offered by private insurance companies and are designed to “supplement” Original Medicare (Parts A and B). These plans help cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments.

Key Features:

  • Freedom to Choose Providers: You can visit any doctor or hospital in the U.S. that accepts Medicare—no networks or referrals needed.
  • Predictable Costs: Most Medigap plans offer standardized benefits, making it easier to plan your healthcare expenses.
  • No Extra Benefits: These plans don’t include prescription drug coverage or extras like dental or vision—those must be purchased separately.

Considerations:

  • Monthly Premiums: Medigap plans typically have higher monthly premiums than Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Separate Part D Plan Required: If you need drug coverage, you’ll need to enroll in a standalone Part D plan.

🩺 What Are Medicare Advantage Plans?

Medicare Advantage plans are all-in-one alternatives to Original Medicare, offered by private insurers approved by Medicare. These plans replace your Part A and Part B coverage and often include extra benefits.

Key Features:

  • Bundled Coverage: Most plans include prescription drugs, and many offer dental, vision, hearing, and even gym memberships.
  • Lower Monthly Premiums: Some plans have very low or even $0 monthly premiums.
  • Managed Care Structure: Plans typically have provider networks (HMO or PPO), meaning you may need to choose doctors within the plan or get referrals for specialists.

Considerations:

  • Out-of-Pocket Costs Vary: While premiums are often lower, copays and coinsurance can add up depending on how you use healthcare services. The Maximum out of Pocket acts as a stop loss measure for these costs.
  • Network Restrictions: You may be limited to local providers and face higher costs for out-of-network care.

💡 Which One Should You Choose?

The right plan depends on your healthcare needs, financial goals, and lifestyle preferences.

  • If you value predictability, national provider access, and are comfortable paying a higher premium for peace of mind, a Medicare Supplement plan may be the better fit.
  • If you’re looking for lower premiums, additional benefits, and are willing to work within a provider network, a Medicare Advantage plan could offer great value.
