Understanding this page

Insurance Carriers—not Healthcare Providers

In Medicare, the word “provider” usually means a doctor, hospital, pharmacy or other healthcare professional. This page is about private insurance companies—also called insurance carriers or Medicare organizations.

These companies may offer Medicare Advantage plans, standalone Part D plans, Medicare Supplements or separate dental, vision and hearing products. The products available depend on the company, state, county, ZIP code, eligibility and coverage year.

Quick answer: Thompson Medicare Brokerage represents multiple insurance companies, but no broker represents every plan available in every market. I compare the contracted options available to me and clearly explain when another resource should also be reviewed.
Coverage categories

What Types of Coverage Are Available?

Medicare Advantage

Private plans that provide Medicare Part A and Part B benefits. Many include Part D and may offer additional benefits. Networks, costs and authorization rules vary.

Learn about Medicare Advantage →

Medicare Part D

Standalone prescription drug plans for people using Original Medicare. Plans differ in premiums, formularies, pharmacies, drug tiers and coverage requirements.

Learn about Medicare Part D →

Medicare Supplement

Medigap policies work with Original Medicare to help cover specified deductibles, copayments and coinsurance. Benefits are standardized by plan letter in most states.

Learn about Medicare Supplements →

Additional Insurance

Separate products may provide dental, vision, hearing or other coverage not included in Original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement.

Not every insurance company offers every type of coverage. A company may offer Medicare Advantage in one county, Part D in another state, Medicare Supplements elsewhere—or no currently available product in your area.

Why multiple companies matter

Why Work With More Than One Carrier?

Medicare coverage is not interchangeable merely because two plans are both issued by well-known insurance companies. Every plan can have different provider access, prescription coverage, costs and rules.

Different Provider Networks

Two plans from different carriers—or two plans from the same carrier—can include different doctors, hospitals, laboratories and medical-equipment suppliers.

Different Drug Coverage

Formularies, tiers, preferred pharmacies, prior authorization, quantity limits and step-therapy requirements can vary substantially.

Different Costs

Premiums, deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and maximum out-of-pocket exposure must be reviewed together—not one number at a time.

Different Additional Benefits

Dental, vision, hearing, transportation, over-the-counter and other benefits can have different limits, networks and eligibility rules.

Different Service Areas

Medicare Advantage availability is county-specific. A plan offered in Springfield may not be offered in Texas County or another Missouri or Illinois community.

Annual Changes

Carriers can enter or leave markets, rename products and change plan benefits, networks, formularies and premiums from one year to the next.

How I compare coverage

The Carrier Name Is Only the Beginning

Choosing coverage based solely on an insurance company’s reputation can miss the details that determine whether a particular plan actually works for you.

What I Review Why It Matters
Exact plan One carrier may offer several plans with different networks, costs and rules in the same county.
Doctors and hospitals Participation must be checked against the exact plan—not just the insurance company’s name.
Prescriptions Every medication, dosage and pharmacy should be compared against the plan’s current formulary and pricing.
Total medical costs Premiums, copayments, deductibles and maximum out-of-pocket exposure should be considered together.
Travel and provider access HMO, PPO, Original Medicare and Medigap arrangements can work very differently outside your local area.
Coverage restrictions Referrals, prior authorization, step therapy and quantity limits can affect access to care or medications.
Additional benefits The usable value depends on provider participation, allowances, exclusions, eligibility requirements and expiration rules.
My approach: Start with your doctors, prescriptions, budget and priorities. Then determine which available plan and carrier combination fits those needs—not the other way around.

Independent guidance

What Does “Independent Broker” Mean?

A captive agent generally represents one insurance company or a limited group of affiliated products. An independent broker can contract with multiple organizations and help compare different carriers.

Independence does not mean access to every plan in existence. It means I can compare the organizations and products I am properly licensed, contracted, appointed and certified to offer.

  • I explain tradeoffs instead of presenting only the attractive features
  • I check doctors, hospitals, prescriptions and pharmacies
  • I compare applicable costs and coverage rules
  • I disclose when a plan or carrier is not represented
  • I remain available when coverage problems arise after enrollment

Missouri and Illinois

Local Carrier Availability Varies

Missouri Medicare Options

Availability differs across Springfield, Texas County, St. Louis, Kansas City and Missouri’s rural counties. Provider networks and hospital participation can also vary within one insurance company.

Telephone and virtual consultations are available statewide, with local appointment-based assistance in Springfield and the Houston/Texas County area.

Illinois Medicare Options

Illinois has its own carrier markets, provider systems, Medicare Supplement rules and integrated D-SNP arrangements. A company offering coverage in Missouri may offer different products—or none at all—in Illinois.

Personalized telephone and virtual Medicare guidance is available throughout Illinois.

Frequently asked questions

Medicare Carrier Questions

Does Thompson Medicare Brokerage represent every insurance company?

No. No broker should imply access to every plan everywhere. Benjamin works with numerous organizations, but contracting and availability vary by product, state, county and coverage year.

Does every listed carrier offer plans in my county?

No. Medicare Advantage availability is county-specific, Part D options vary by region, and Medicare Supplement availability depends on state rules, eligibility and company offerings.

Does the same carrier use one provider network for every plan?

Not necessarily. A carrier can offer several HMO, PPO or Special Needs Plans with different networks in the same county. The exact plan must be checked.

Is the largest insurance company automatically the safest choice?

No. Company size does not determine whether your doctors, prescriptions, hospitals or preferred pharmacies fit a particular plan.

Does a $0 premium mean the plan has no costs?

No. A $0 plan premium does not eliminate the Medicare Part B premium or the plan’s deductibles, copayments, coinsurance and other potential expenses.

Do all Medicare Supplements with the same letter have the same benefits?

Standard Medicare Supplement benefits are generally identical for the same plan letter, regardless of carrier. Premiums, pricing methods, discounts, underwriting and service can differ.

Can carrier offerings change each year?

Yes. Companies can enter or leave markets, discontinue plans, change names and alter premiums, benefits, networks, formularies and cost sharing for a new coverage year.

Does working with Benjamin add a fee to my plan premium?

Thompson Medicare Brokerage does not charge beneficiaries a separate fee for Medicare plan consultations or enrollments. Insurance organizations may compensate authorized agents and brokers according to applicable rules.

Can Benjamin help after I enroll?

Yes. Year-round advocacy is a central part of Thompson Medicare Brokerage’s service. Benjamin remains available when billing, pharmacy, provider or coverage questions arise.
