Springfield Medicare Provider Access
Mercy or CoxHealth With Medicare? What to Verify
“Accepts Medicare” is not enough information. Check your exact coverage, doctor, facility and location before choosing a plan or scheduling non-emergency care.
The short answer: Mercy and CoxHealth both provide care to Medicare beneficiaries in the Springfield area, but that does not mean every Mercy or CoxHealth doctor participates in every Medicare Advantage plan.
If you have Original Medicare, the main question is generally whether the provider accepts Medicare. If you have Medicare Advantage, verify the exact plan product, physician, practice, facility, address and coverage year. Referral and prior-authorization rules may also apply.
A healthcare system can participate while a particular doctor or plan does not
Broad statements such as “Mercy takes Medicare” or “CoxHealth accepts my insurance company” can leave out the details that determine how a claim will actually be handled.
Insurance company
One company may offer several Medicare Advantage products with different networks, service areas and rules.
Exact plan
Give the office the complete plan name and plan type—not only the logo printed on the member card.
Individual doctor
A physician may contract through a practice or medical group that is different from the hospital’s arrangement.
Facility and address
Participation may need to be checked for the exact clinic, hospital, outpatient department or surgery center.
Coverage year
Provider contracts can change. An answer from last year may not be reliable for the current or upcoming plan year.
Service requirements
In-network status does not replace a required referral, prior authorization or medical-necessity determination.
Ask a different question for Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage
The phrase “Medicare coverage” can describe very different arrangements. Identify yours before checking Mercy or CoxHealth access.
| Coverage | Primary provider question | Additional checks |
|---|---|---|
| Original Medicare | Does the doctor or facility accept Medicare for the covered service? | Confirm acceptance of new patients, Medicare assignment and any coverage requirements for the service. |
| Original Medicare with Medigap | Does the provider accept Original Medicare? | A standard Medicare Supplement generally follows Original Medicare. Medicare SELECT policies can have network rules. |
| Medicare Advantage HMO | Are the doctor and facility in the exact plan’s network? | Check primary-care selection, referral rules and prior authorization. |
| Medicare Advantage PPO | Are the providers in-network, and what happens if they are not? | Review the higher out-of-network cost and confirm that the provider will treat an out-of-network member. |

Use Mercy and CoxHealth resources as starting points—not blanket guarantees
Both healthcare systems publish insurance information for patients. Those pages can help narrow the search, but you should still verify the exact plan, provider and location directly.
Mercy Medicare information
Mercy publishes a Medicare coverage page that includes Medicare Advantage information by state. Lists can change and may not establish participation for every Mercy-affiliated physician or facility.
Review Mercy’s current Medicare information →CoxHealth Medicare Advantage information
CoxHealth maintains a Medicare Advantage page and posts network notices when participation changes. Confirm the plan product and provider rather than relying on the insurance-company name alone.
Review CoxHealth’s current Medicare Advantage information →Website lists can become outdated
Check the publication date or current plan year, then confirm through the plan and provider before enrollment or scheduled non-emergency care.
The better fit is the system that works with your actual healthcare needs
This is not a ranking of Mercy against CoxHealth. A useful Medicare review starts with the care you use now and may reasonably need—not a generalized claim that one system is always better.

A practical Mercy or CoxHealth network-checking process
Use both the plan and the provider. Neither side should be asked only a broad yes-or-no question.
Ask the Medicare plan
- Provide the doctor’s full name, practice and street address.
- Confirm the hospital or outpatient facility separately.
- Ask about referrals and prior authorization.
- Request a call reference number and keep your notes.
Ask the provider
- Give the office your complete plan name and member information.
- Ask about the physician and exact appointment location.
- Confirm acceptance of new patients under that plan.
- Recheck before a costly scheduled test or procedure.
Check everyone involved in a scheduled procedure
The hospital can be in-network while a physician, anesthesiology group, radiology group, pathology group or post-acute provider has a different contracting arrangement.
Do not assume this year’s Springfield network will remain unchanged
Medicare Advantage contracts, provider networks, cost sharing and authorization requirements can change for January 1. Review important providers before deciding whether to keep or change coverage.
Read the ANOC
The Annual Notice of Change explains many plan changes, but it does not replace a current provider-directory review.
Learn how to review your ANOC →Recheck every key provider
Include doctors, hospitals, outpatient locations and any facility tied to scheduled treatment for the coming year.
Compare the complete plan
Provider access matters, but prescriptions, medical costs, maximum out-of-pocket exposure and benefits matter too.

Mercy provides care to Medicare beneficiaries, but the correct question depends on whether you have Original Medicare or a specific Medicare Advantage plan. Verify the exact physician, facility, plan and coverage year.

CoxHealth participates with certain Medicare Advantage coverage, but participation can vary by plan product, provider, facility and year. Check CoxHealth’s current information and verify directly with the plan.
