Medicare Advantage vs. Medicare Supplement in Springfield
Compare provider access, prescription coverage, travel flexibility and costs before choosing the Medicare approach that fits you.
One of the most important Medicare decisions is choosing how you want to receive your healthcare coverage.
After enrolling in Medicare Parts A and B, many Springfield beneficiaries consider one of two approaches:
- Receiving Medicare benefits through a Medicare Advantage plan
- Keeping Original Medicare and adding a Medicare Supplement, or Medigap, policy
Both approaches can provide valuable coverage, but they work very differently. The appropriate choice depends on your doctors, prescriptions, travel habits, budget and comfort with different types of healthcare costs.
Medicare Advantage generally combines Medicare coverage through a private plan with defined networks and cost-sharing. Medigap works alongside Original Medicare to help pay certain costs that Original Medicare leaves behind.
🧭 The Two Main Medicare Approaches
Medicare Advantage
A Medicare Advantage plan is offered by a private insurance company approved by Medicare. The plan provides your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits instead of receiving those benefits directly through Original Medicare.
Many Medicare Advantage plans also include Part D prescription coverage and may offer additional benefits.
Original Medicare With Medigap
With this approach, Original Medicare remains your primary medical coverage. A Medicare Supplement policy helps pay certain deductibles, copays and coinsurance left by Original Medicare.
You generally add a separate Part D plan if you want outpatient prescription drug coverage.
You cannot use a Medicare Supplement policy to pay Medicare Advantage deductibles or copays. These are separate approaches—you generally choose one or the other.
🏥 Doctors and Springfield Healthcare Networks
Your doctors and preferred healthcare facilities should play a major role in your Medicare decision.
With Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage plans may use provider networks. Depending on the plan type, receiving non-emergency care outside the network may cost more or may not be covered.
Before considering a plan, verify:
- Your primary care physician
- Specialists
- Preferred Springfield hospitals
- Outpatient facilities
- Therapy providers
- Medical equipment suppliers
Do not rely solely on a general statement that a doctor “accepts Medicare.” Accepting Original Medicare is different from participating in a particular Medicare Advantage network.
With Original Medicare and Medigap
Medigap policies generally do not use their own medical provider networks. You can normally see any healthcare provider in the United States who accepts Medicare.
This broader provider access can be especially valuable for people who:
- See multiple specialists
- Receive treatment outside Springfield
- Split time between different states
- Want fewer network considerations
Networks and provider participation can change. Confirm providers directly with the plan and healthcare provider before enrolling.
💰 Monthly Premiums and Healthcare Costs
Neither approach is automatically less expensive for everyone. They distribute healthcare costs differently.
Medicare Advantage costs
Medicare Advantage plans may have relatively low additional monthly premiums, although you must continue paying the applicable Medicare Part B premium.
As you receive care, you may pay:
- Medical or prescription deductibles
- Primary care copays
- Specialist copays
- Hospital cost-sharing
- Coinsurance for certain procedures or services
Medicare Advantage plans include an annual maximum out-of-pocket limit for covered Part A and Part B services. Prescription drug expenses do not count toward the medical maximum out-of-pocket limit.
Medicare Supplement costs
Medigap generally involves a separate monthly premium in addition to your Medicare Part B premium and any standalone Part D premium.
Depending on the standardized Medigap plan you select, the policy may cover much of the cost-sharing left by Original Medicare.
This approach can create higher predictable monthly expenses but reduce the amount you pay when receiving Medicare-covered medical services.
Consider premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, prescription expenses and potential high-cost years. The lowest premium is not always the lowest total cost.
💊 Prescription Drug Coverage
Prescription coverage is handled differently under the two approaches.
Medicare Advantage
Many Medicare Advantage plans include Part D prescription drug coverage. In that situation, medical and prescription coverage are combined within the same plan.
Some Medicare Advantage plans do not include prescription coverage. The rules about adding a separate Part D plan depend on the type of Medicare Advantage plan.
Original Medicare and Medigap
Modern Medigap policies do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage. You generally need to enroll in a separate Part D plan if you want prescription coverage.
Under either approach, review:
- Your exact medications and dosages
- Drug tiers
- Preferred pharmacies
- Deductibles and copays
- Prior authorization
- Quantity limits
- Step therapy

✈️ Travel and Coverage Away From Springfield
Consider how frequently you travel and whether you receive routine care outside Missouri.
Medicare Advantage travel considerations
Medicare Advantage plans cover emergency and urgently needed care within the United States. Coverage for routine non-emergency care outside the plan’s service area depends on the plan.
Some plan types offer out-of-network benefits, while others generally require routine care from participating providers.
Original Medicare and Medigap travel considerations
Original Medicare generally allows you to receive covered services from Medicare-participating providers throughout the United States.
Certain Medigap plans may also provide limited foreign travel emergency coverage, subject to the policy’s requirements and limits.
If you travel frequently, maintain homes in multiple states or receive specialty care outside Springfield, include those needs in your comparison.
📋 Prior Authorization and Referrals
Medicare Advantage
Medicare Advantage plans may require prior authorization before covering certain services, procedures, equipment or medications.
Some plans may also require referrals for particular specialists. Requirements vary by plan and service.
Original Medicare with Medigap
Original Medicare generally does not require referrals to see specialists. Medicare coverage rules still apply, and services must be medically necessary and covered by Medicare.
A Medigap policy follows Medicare’s payment decision. If Original Medicare does not cover a service, Medigap generally will not cover it simply because you have a supplement.
➕ Additional Benefits
Medicare Advantage plans may include benefits that Original Medicare does not ordinarily cover, potentially including certain:
- Routine dental services
- Routine vision services
- Hearing benefits
- Fitness programs
- Transportation or other supplemental benefits
Availability, limitations and eligibility requirements vary by plan and year. Review how a benefit actually works rather than comparing plans only by a benefit’s advertised value.
Medigap policies generally focus on helping cover Original Medicare cost-sharing. They typically do not provide the same types of additional dental, vision or hearing benefits associated with some Medicare Advantage plans.
Separate coverage may be available for services Original Medicare and Medigap do not cover.
Medicare Advantage benefits may use separate allowances, provider networks and service limits. Learn how dental, vision and hearing coverage differs before treating extras as the deciding factor.
🔄 How Easily Can You Change Later?
This is one of the most important differences—and one that is frequently overlooked.
Changing Medicare Advantage plans
Medicare beneficiaries may have opportunities to change Medicare Advantage coverage during applicable enrollment periods.
Changing Medicare Advantage plans does not necessarily mean you will be able to purchase a Medicare Supplement policy without medical underwriting.
Changing or purchasing Medigap
Your federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period generally lasts six months, beginning the first month you are at least 65 and enrolled in Medicare Part B.
During this period, you can generally purchase any Medigap policy sold in your state without being denied because of pre-existing health conditions.
Outside that window or another protected enrollment right, an insurance company may:
- Ask health questions
- Review your medical history
- Charge more where permitted
- Decline your application
Do not leave Medicare Advantage expecting that you can automatically obtain Medigap afterward. Investigate your Medigap eligibility before completing the change.
Official Medigap enrollment information is available at Medicare.gov.
