Your insurance plan’s card

Contact your Medicare Advantage, Part D or Supplement insurer using its official website or member services number. Medicare does not replace an insurer’s card.

Quick answer: With Original Medicare, show your Medicare card and any relevant supplemental coverage card. With Medicare Advantage, generally use the plan’s member card for covered care. Use your drug-plan information at the pharmacy, and keep your federal Medicare card safe.

Request the Right Replacement

Federal Medicare card

Use your secure Medicare account to print or order a copy, or call 1-800-633-4227. People receiving Railroad Retirement benefits can request a replacement through RRB at 1-877-772-5772.

Insurer member card

Contact the Medicare Advantage, Part D or Medigap insurer. Ask whether a temporary or digital card is available and confirm the mailing address. Medicare does not issue the insurer’s replacement card.

A lost card does not by itself cancel coverage. If you need care before the replacement arrives, ask the provider or pharmacy and the insurer how they can verify eligibility. Read the official Medicare card instructions.

Check the record

Look at Dates and Personal Details

The federal card identifies Parts A and B and their start dates. An insurer card identifies that insurer’s membership. Possessing a card does not establish that coverage remains active today; confirm current eligibility when an application, move or plan change is involved.

After a move, update the agency handling your Medicare record—Social Security or RRB—and separately update each insurer. Do not assume a postal forwarding order changes all enrollment records. If your legal name is wrong, ask the agency responsible for your record how to correct it.

Use our moving-with-Medicare guide before changing plans. A permanent move may affect service-area eligibility; a replacement card alone does not resolve that issue.

Keep your number private

Use Official Accounts and Trusted Contacts

Protect your Medicare number as you would a financial account number. Share it when needed with trusted health care and coverage professionals. Avoid posting card photos or putting a Medicare number in an ordinary website comment or social-media message.

If an unexpected caller claims your card must be activated for a fee, stop and verify through Medicare or your insurer using a number you obtain independently. If you think someone has used your Medicare number, contact Medicare. Our Medicare scam-prevention guide covers common warning signs.

Common questions

Medicare Card FAQ

Should I throw away my Medicare card after joining Medicare Advantage?

No. Store it securely. You may need its information for future enrollment or if you return to Original Medicare.

My new card never arrived. Does that mean enrollment failed?

Not necessarily. Verify acceptance, effective date and address with the organization processing enrollment. Ask for temporary proof before submitting another application.

Is a benefits allowance card the same as my health-plan card?

Not necessarily. Some plans issue a separate card for eligible supplemental benefits. Ask the insurer what each card does; an allowance card may not contain the information needed to bill medical or pharmacy claims.
