My Medicare Supplement Premium Went Up: What Can I Do?
Understand a Medigap rate increase, compare replacement policies and check switching rights before changing or canceling your coverage.

Understand the notice
First Find Out Exactly What Changed
A premium increase is a reason to review your policy and budget. It does not automatically mean you should leave a policy that otherwise fits. Find the old premium, new premium, effective date, plan letter and insurer’s explanation. Check whether a household or payment discount changed.
Calculate the annual difference as well as the monthly one. An illustrative increase from $160 to $190 is $30 a month, or $360 a year. That tells you the size of the problem you are trying to solve without assuming a replacement quote will be available.
Why rates change
Rating Method Is Only One Part of the Story
Medigap insurers set premiums using factors such as the policy’s rating method, location and applicable discounts. Premiums can increase over time. Issue-age or community-rated coverage should not be read as a lifetime promise that the dollar premium will stay fixed.
Our Medigap rating-method article explains those distinctions. Ask the insurer whether your change involves an age step, a broader approved rate adjustment, a discount ending or more than one factor. Avoid concluding that your own recent medical claim caused the increase simply because the timing overlaps.
Compare fairly
Start with the Same Plan Letter
Compare the same standardized plan letter first, with matching deductible options and any SELECT restrictions. A standard Plan G quote and a high-deductible Plan G quote are not interchangeable budgets. Ask for the premium you would actually qualify for, including eligibility, underwriting and discount conditions.
- What is the quoted premium at my current age and address?
- Is the discount guaranteed to continue, and what could end it?
- Does this policy have provider restrictions under Medicare SELECT?
- What medical questions or switching rights apply?
- When could approved replacement coverage begin?
Historical increases can inform your questions, but neither an insurer nor a broker can guarantee future premiums.
Switching rights
Check the Route Before Submitting a Replacement
Federal Medigap open enrollment and guaranteed-issue rights apply in specific circumstances. Outside protected situations, an insurer may use medical underwriting. The fall Medicare enrollment period is not a general annual right to change Medigap without health questions.
Missouri readers: start with the Missouri Medigap Anniversary Rule guide before comparing replacements. It explains the timing and same-plan protections. Do not assume that a protected same-letter change also authorizes a different letter or deductible design.
Readers in Illinois or another state should check the protections that apply in their own state and circumstances. A Missouri switching rule does not travel with an article link.
Possible tradeoffs
A Lower Premium Can Mean Different Exposure
If matching coverage still exceeds your budget, compare options explicitly. Plan G versus Plan N involves benefit differences. High-deductible Plan G involves more cost sharing before the supplement pays. Changing to Medicare Advantage changes the coverage arrangement and needs a separate provider, drug and cost review.
For an existing Plan F or C member, review legacy Medigap eligibility and premium considerations. A different plan can sometimes help, but eligibility and a workable total budget come first.
Before you cancel
Keep Coverage in Place During the Decision
Confirm acceptance, the final premium and the effective date of any replacement. Medicare’s guidance describes a 30-day free-look period when switching policies; keeping both temporarily can require paying both premiums. Ask the insurers how to coordinate the transition and follow their written instructions.
Bring your increase notice, policy schedule, original effective date and current medication information to a review. If keeping the policy is the best available choice, the review can still help you understand the increase and plan for the next opportunity.
