Snowbirds With Medicare
Living part of the year in another state can change how convenient your Medicare coverage feels. Your permanent residence, provider access, pharmacy network and plan rules all deserve attention before a seasonal stay.

Is the Other Home Temporary or Your New Permanent Residence?
A seasonal stay is not automatically a permanent move. Medicare Advantage and Part D eligibility is based on where you permanently reside, not simply where you receive mail for part of the year. If your permanent residence changes, the plans available to you can change and a move may open a Medicare Special Enrollment Period.
Temporary seasonal stay
Your primary residence remains in the current plan’s service area. You still need to check how the plan covers routine care and prescriptions while you are away.
Permanent move
Your primary residence changes. Update your official address and use the Moving With Medicare guide to coordinate plan availability and enrollment timing.
How Common Medicare Arrangements Work for Snowbirds
| Coverage arrangement | Routine care in another state | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Original Medicare | Generally available from U.S. doctors and hospitals that accept Medicare, subject to ordinary coverage rules. | Whether the provider accepts Medicare and assignment; prescription coverage is separate. |
| Original Medicare plus Medigap | The Medigap policy generally pays according to its plan letter after Original Medicare approves the service. | Any Medicare SELECT network rules, policy notices and separate Part D access. |
| Medicare Advantage HMO | Routine out-of-network care is generally not covered except for limited protected situations; some HMO-POS plans allow defined out-of-network services. | Destination-area network, visitor benefit, referrals, authorization and follow-up care. |
| Medicare Advantage PPO | Covered out-of-network services may be available at a higher cost, but a provider still must be willing to treat you under the plan. | In- and out-of-network costs, provider willingness, authorization and maximum out-of-pocket limits. |
| Part D or MA-PD | Network pharmacies may be available nationally, but preferred status and refill rules vary by plan and store. | Exact destination pharmacy, extended supplies, mail order and refill timing. |
Service Area and Travel Network Questions Matter
Emergency care and urgently needed care are protected when needed, but that is not the same as routine access for checkups, specialists, therapy, imaging or planned follow-up care. Review the complete Medicare Advantage travel-network guide before relying on a plan for months away from home.
Ask about routine care
- Are there in-network providers near the seasonal address?
- Does the plan offer a visitor or traveler program?
- Which services are available away from the service area?
- Will referrals or prior authorization still be required?
Ask about a long absence
- How long may you remain outside the service area?
- Does the Evidence of Coverage impose an extended-absence rule?
- Which destinations qualify for a visitor benefit?
- What notice must you give the plan?
Compare the underlying HMO, PPO and HMO-POS rules and verify important doctors using the provider-network checklist.
Nationwide Provider Access Can Simplify Seasonal Living
With Original Medicare, you may generally obtain Medicare-covered services from any U.S. provider that accepts Medicare. A standard Medicare Supplement does not ordinarily create a separate doctor network and pays according to its standardized benefits when Original Medicare approves the claim.
For a practical comparison of cost sharing, see Medigap Plan G versus Plan N. For travel beyond the country, use the separate guide to Medicare outside the United States.
Check the Pharmacy Near Each Home
Part D plans use pharmacy networks even when your medical coverage is Original Medicare. A national chain is not automatically preferred at every location, and an out-of-network purchase may require you to pay the full price.
- Enter the exact destination pharmacy in the plan’s current search tool.
- Confirm whether that store is preferred, standard or out of network.
- Ask about a two- or three-month supply when available.
- Coordinate refill timing before you travel; do not assume an early fill will process.
- Ask how mail order works at a temporary address and keep a local backup option.
Use the detailed Medicare prescriptions while traveling guide and the Medicare Part D hub.
Snowbird Medicare Checklist
Doctors and care
- List regular and likely specialists near both homes.
- Identify hospitals, urgent care and dialysis access when relevant.
- Verify routine-care coverage under the exact plan.
- Ask how telehealth and follow-up care are handled.
Coverage and documents
- Confirm the permanent address on Medicare and plan records.
- Review the current Evidence of Coverage.
- Carry Medicare or plan cards and member-services numbers.
- Keep an updated medication and allergy list.
Snowbirds and Medicare FAQ
Can I use Original Medicare in two states?
Generally, yes, when the care is Medicare-covered and the provider accepts Medicare. Check any separate Part D plan and Medigap policy independently.
Can a snowbird keep a Medicare Advantage plan?
Possibly, if the permanent residence remains in the plan’s service area and the plan’s extended-absence rules are met. Routine care away from home may still be restricted. Ask the plan about its exact Evidence of Coverage and any visitor or traveler program.
Does a seasonal address create a Special Enrollment Period?
Not by itself. A permanent move that changes the service area or available plans may create an SEP. Medicare or the plan makes the official eligibility decision.
Should I change Medicare plans every season?
Usually not simply because the season changes. Compare coverage based on your permanent residence and how it serves care in both locations, then use an available enrollment period only when a change is appropriate.
